I teach mindfulness techniques such as staying in the present moment, breath awareness, meditation, body scan and naming parts of the body where sensation lies, gratitude, along with yoga in order to cultivate where our discomfort lies in the body. The body has a language all of its own as best described in Bessel Van der Kolk’s book, The Body Keeps the Score.
We are finding that people are helped much faster when they can learn to read what their bodies are telling them.
Depression, anxiety, stress, anger all have a place where they land in our bodies. Mindfulness techniques help to become more aware of this and to gain acceptance of the feelings and sensations which ultimately brings about a more peaceful way of living. This practice helps people to get grounded faster so as not to drown in unhealthy emotions.
In yoga, mindfulness techniques are always practiced, as well as with eating, going for a walk, petting your dog, listening to music. The more one practices using mindfulness in daily living, the more able one can regulate negative sensations and increase positive sensations.
